Waking up handcuffed to the floor, teams in this escape room thriller have one hour to escape from a murderous maniac.
This split room escape game’s puzzle gameplay relied on heavy communication and observation. Through the use of walkie talkies, teams must decode their collective surroundings in order to release themselves from their binds. Puzzles made sense within the narrative of the story arc but, at times felt slightly uneven between the two rooms. One of the rooms had less overall to do than its counterpart.
Split into two rooms – a blood-stained bathroom and an ominous furnace – the levels of set driven tension were immediately evident. While creepy and dark, Taken hit a great tone for maintaining gameplay. Both opening rooms felt straight out of a horror movie and there were a couple startling surprises along the way.
For an escape room where we were chained to the floor, Epic Escape Rooms Brooklyn provides a latch for easy release in case of emergency. As questions arise on the safety of escape rooms, especially in NYC, this was a great touch that kept the game true to its murderous theme while being safety conscious. Additionally, this escape room provides a nice mix of puzzles and tasks to where teams won’t feel as if they are completing similar obstacles as the room progresses.
Each section of this escape room had certain props and devices that were oddly not used in our experience. While not being your typical red herrings, this left our group confused when they weren’t utilized. Additionally, the final portion of this escape room felt very cramped for our group of four and one of the final puzzles felt like it wasn’t properly prompted.
This Room is a Good Match for
Taken was a thrilling adventure, that kept us on edge for its entirety. While it might not be as polished as some of its counterparts, it presents an intriguing split-room game accessible for most experience levels.
